Week 10_ Christine Chau_ASA150E

Christine Chau
Week 10
ASA150E

Throughout this quarter, ASA150E has taught me new perspectives regarding Southeast Asian experiences. I enjoyed the content we have learned in this class as well as the guest speakers who took the time out to come present in our class. Working on the project with Shannon and Andrea has given me more skills on working in a team group setting by finding time throughout our busy schedules to meet and talk about our ideas in an open and comfortable space. I am excited to see what the exhibit has in store for us after seeing all the groups present their artistic statement. It shows what topics interested different people in the class and what they decided to highlight, creating it in an artistic way. I think people often overlook the aftermath of Viet Nam war and the effects that it carried throughout generations. I also do think a lot of people over look the problems that had long lasting effects is due to the silence and lack of education. The only reason why people like us know this information and the hardships people have gone through is simply because we have chosen to take a class and educate ourselves. Those who have no connection culturally or in any other means will not really know how the war truly affected people, unless they're into histories of war itself. It's hard to educate people who doesn't want to learn with an open mind, and I think that's what I've learned throughout the years on social media. No matter how many facts you spit out to people with backed up research, people will simply choose not to believe it because they don't want to believe it or they think they are morally right. And that's the hardest part about overcoming the barriers of being silenced, having people not wanting to listen to you and your struggles and being validated for them. I hope as the years go on people will finally open their eyes to see the silence millions of people have been suffering through.
